One of the biggest storylines coming into the 2024 IMMAF European Championships was in the Junior Light Heavyweight division. All medalists from last year’s world championships were a part of this year’s continental tournament, which meant that a rematch of the final, between world champion Ivan Poremchuck and silver medalist Lukasz Makowski (pictured) could take place. When the duo confirmed their rematch after winning semifinal bouts, the stage was set for a huge rematch.
And the bout did not disappoint with both men going for broke and looking to earn a finish after their first encounter ended in a unanimous decision victory for Poremchuk. This time, however, Makowski came ready to extract revenge and that’s what he did: after being rocked, he reversed positions, sinked in a rear-naked choke and forced his rival to tap out.
It was the second of two golds for Team Poland, who also earned a first-place in the Women’s Atomweight division, with Julie Glaz. Team Ireland, through Flobater Fares (one of the breakout stars of the entire competition) and Jordan Scully, also earned two golds, while Team Ukraine continued to dominate, winning four Junior finals.
The stage is set for the final Jordan Scully day of competition as the Senior Finals take place in Belgrade, Serbia. All divisions have settled their final match-ups earlier today with the semi-finals becoming a showcase for the likes of Finland’s Sani Brannfors who had to work hard to land herself a first Senior final following tremendous success in Youth and Junior categories.
Featherweight world champion Elias Erber also moved on to the final at 145 pounds, as Tirlei-Luka Abramovic, from Croatia, continued his path of destruction in the Heavyweight division with yet another KO to set himself up for a big showdown against Bulgaria’s Georgi Hristov, in our final matchup of the 2024 IMMAF European Championships.
